This rain gauge accurately measures the precipitation at a certain location. The tipping bucket mechanism activates when the target quantity of precipitation has fallen.
The rain gauge contains a funnel area to collect precipitation and, depending on the size, one or more tipping buckets. The collector is designed so that water does not splash out, in compliance with recommendations by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The instrument gives off an automatic signal when the mechanism tips, which can be connected to a datalogger.
Method
When a tipping bucket is filled, the magnetically coupled hinge tips over. The instrument gives off an electronic signal that can be sent to an automatic datalogger. If the precipitation is solid, such as snow or hail, the instrument measures the amount of water when it’s melted.
