    A SmallRotoSonic ML (SRS ML) drilling rig shows up in a Chinese news broadcast about a big urbanisation related project in Jinan area, China. 

    Background

    • The high quality samples were send to the lab for geo-mechanical parameters and soil physical parameters.
    • They need this information to identify the soil stability for foundation and future underground traffic development.
    • Future research jobs in this area within 500 meters are: groundwater resources survey, supply emergency water supply. Within 2.000 meters, geothermal energy and shallow temperature survey, for the purpose of energy saving and emission reduction

    • They used a Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill SmallRotoSonic ML drilling rig with 3x5 sampling system for highly intensive drilling and sampling at 100 meters depth.
    • Sonic drilling will increase production as well as the best quality of soil samples.

    • The Grebbedijk is a levee located between the municipalities of Wageningen and Rhenen in the Netherlands
    • This levee protects 250,000 residents in the Gelderse Valley adjacent to the waters of the Lower Rhine
    • In 2023 the more-than-5-kilometre-long levee will be reinforced as part of the Flood Protection Programme
    • The Water Board is extensively monitoring the levee to collect as much groundwater data as possible for this purpose
    • Reindert Stellingwerff of the Vallei and Veluwe Water Board: ‘We want to prepare an optimal design for the Grebbedijk. This requires data.'

    Background

    • Engbertsdijksvenen is a Natura 2000 nature preserve in the Province of Overijssel in the Netherlands
    • The Engbertsdijksvenen are part of a former high raised bog region and still contains a small core with living raised bog
    • Remedial actions were prepared for this special and protected 1,000 hectare nature preserve on the basis of European regulations, to maintain and restore the existing raised bogs, among other things
    • To monitor the effects of the remedial actions, the Engbertsdijksvenen groundwater monitoring network was established by Eijkelkamp Soil & Water
    • The fact that residents and land owners are closely involved in configuring the network makes the project all the more special

  • Sustainable flow rate measuring point for Renkums Beekdal

    Background

    • The Renkums Beekdal is a very interesting creek valley from an ecological and hydrological perspective
    • The situation in the creek valley area has changed for a number of reasons
    • Nowadays this means that the Water Board is confronted with reduced and unpredictable water levels
    • This is why the Water Board is currently undertaking repair work together with several partners to make the water system more robust, make better use of the available water and to enable the ecology to flourish

    • To properly understand how the water system functions, the Water Board has asked Eijkelkamp Soil & Water to set up a permanent flow rate measuring point
    • In December 2018 the Water Board measured the high flow rates caused by high levels of precipitation. The system is showing a consistent discharge rate without any interruptions. Perfect, in other words.

    • The Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM) devotes its efforts to helping create a better living environment in Flanders, Belgium
    • Flanders has more than 20,000 kilometres of waterways
    • To achieve and maintain high water quality, it is of major importance to be able to respond to disasters that can affect water quality as quickly as possible
    • The aim is to be on-site within two hours to monitor the disaster, for example, by taking samples
    • VMM therefore started looking for a new technology to chart incidents and ended up with Eijkelkamp Soil & Water's multiparameter probes

    • Water level management is under pressure due to climate change and climate change is a very high priority for the Rijnland Water Authority
    • Rijnland Water Authority uses an automated decision support system for water level management operations with a wide range of measurement information, including water levels and precipitation
    • The only key item into which Rijnland Water Authority does not have good insight is water evapotranspiration
    • Rijnland Water Authority contacted Eijkelkamp Soil & Water because they wanted to acquire a practical lysimeter station

    • Together with Eijkelkamp Soil & Water, Rijnland Water Authority ultimately installed a lysimeter on sandy soil, on clay soil and on peat soil
    • In May 2017, the Rijnland Water Authority started using the equipment that helps provide better insight into the impact of climate change on water management
    • With these three sites they are covering off the main soil types and together with a meteorological station, and soil moisture and groundwater measurements they now have a unique combination of measuring stations
    • As such, the Rijnland Water Authority has taken a leading role in water management in the Netherlands

    • This was done manually and required a large investment in time.
    • Affligem Brewery first purchased one diver to log the water level of one well at the time.
    • Affligem Brewery saw the immediate advantage and outfitted all active wells with divers and modems.
    • Now Affligem Brewery only have to log on to the Eijkelkamp web portal and export the report to meet the legal obligation of monitoring their water wells.

  • CHAIN - Agriculture in cooperation with nature

    Background

    • The Danube region is a major international hydrological basin and ecological corridor.
    • Development of intensive agricultural production occurred in the examined area.
    • The examined area is extremely sensitive to intensive agricultural production as the diffuse pollution source.
    • Given the existence of two opposite interests in one area, maintaining balance between the nature and human activity is essential.
    • Cross-border cooperation contributes to development and environment protection.
    • The aim of this project was to establish a system for continuous monitoring of the soil and groundwater quality.

    • Eijkelkamp Soil & Water’s partner in the Republic of Serbia, Megra, supplied the Eijkelkamp Soil & Water equipment, training and assisted the CHAIN project team.

    Results of the research

    The CHAIN project members concluded: ‘With respect to the obtained results, soil quality monitoring is our obligation to the future generations, thus the continuation of soil monitoring is necessary in order to identify the patterns of soil quality changes and establish control over soil contamination.’

  • LoRa sensors used in soil moisture monitoring network in The Hague

    Client - BAM (the Netherlands)

    Background to installing the monitoring network

    • The Lange Vijverberg street in The Hague consists of a tram rail route surrounded by many old linden trees.
    • A redesign brought about changes in the habitat of the linden trees. The municipality of The Hague, therefore, wanted to gain insight into the change in soil moisture. 
    • This had to occur in an easy, wireless and economical manner. That’s why Eijkelkamp Soil & Water opted to set up a LoRa monitoring network of soil moisture sensors for this project.
    • Both the operator and the client can observe the change in soil moisture on this platform, and adjust the irrigation plan as needed.

    What is LoRa?

    LoRa is a new way of communicating, where small amounts of data are sent via the LoRa network to a website page.

    Background

    • The Deyang area in southwest China was struck hard by an earthquake in 2008
    • Since then, reconstruction has taken place with a tremendous speed and the urban population grew exponentially
    • Due to this urbanisation, the city’s water supply system can not meet its rapidly growing water demand

    Pilot project

    • A pilot artificial recharge water supply system was developed
    • This system benefits from the technology as introduced in the Amsterdam dune system that forms the main source of drinking water for the city
    • The water supply system increases groundwater storage, maintains constant water supply and improves water quality

  • Site investigation on a beach area with copper tailings

    Description

    • A drilling campaign of 3 weeks on a beach site in Chile with 30 holes up to 15 m depth. 
    • Whilst drilling, undisturbed samples have been taken for laboratory testing and in-situ SPT testing has been performed every 1.5 m. 
    • For a good core recovery and minimizing disturbance of the samples, drilling has been done by Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill.
    • Post drilling, monitoring wells have been installed. PVC liner with a sand screen at the bottom and digital Diver water level logger measurements are done automatically.
    • Geotechnical and hydrogeological study has been made by the combined forces of the MAREC Consortium of the outcome of the above mentioned drilling campaign.

    The MAREC group offered the client a total solution for the site investigation on short term and with a high standard site study with all the expertise from all MAREC companies

  • Hydrological effects of revegetation on hillsides

    Background research

    • The Baviaanskloof is an extremely arid and heavily degraded area as the result of farming. 
    • This means it is hard for the soil to retain the little rainwater that falls, causing serious erosion. 
    • To counter this, it was decided to (re)plant spekboom trees. This tree originates from the region, and does not need much water. 
    • The idea is that because of the spekboom trees, the soil, and most importantly the groundwater, will be better retained and for longer.

    • To measure the effect, Marjan used the Eijkelkamp Soil & Water rainfall simulator
    • “The rainfall simulator is a really great tool that makes it relatively easy to show the effect of vegetation on interception and infiltration.”

    Results of the research

    The research showed that (re)planting spekboom trees does indeed have a substantial effect on water retention.

    • The continued existence of Baltic raised bogs is being threatened by human activity, with degradation as the result.
    • Boggy soil is decomposing and conifers and birches are starting to grow, which causes evaporation of the bog water. Plant species such as cloudberry, sundew and sphagnum are also disappearing.

    • The water works company runs various water extraction points, which must be managed in such a way that the water level in the connected aquifer does not sink below predetermined values

    Background

    • The ‘Municipal Water Management Act’ entails that municipalities are responsible for the prevention of structural groundwater problems.
    • Doetinchem council wanted to digitally manage the existing groundwater measuring network.

    Services provided

    • 47 measurement points were set up and equipped with monitoring well modems. Now the manager receives data every day and thereby easily manages the network.

    Description / Background

    • Along the River Nechi in Colombia mining waste was dumped in the nineteen-fifties. Minatura estimates that, at the time, only 50% was extracted
    • Thousands of samples, 30 metres a day, were taken to map the area of 717 hectares properly and develop an efficient mining plan

  • Monitoring soil moisture stadium FS Basel

    Client - FC Basel (Switzerland)

    Background

    • St. Jakob-Park stadium was opened in 2001. It received the UEFA 4-star award and cost about CHF 250 million. It is the largest stadium in Switzerland.
    • Varying degrees of shading over the pitch area has, over the years, given rise to recurrent irrigation problems.

    • To obtain a better overview of soil moisture and to maintain its gradient differences, PlantCare was contracted to install a monitoring system that measures soil moisture and temperature at given depths at the centre spot and the four corners

  • Protection groundwater against pollution, Berlin

    Description / Background

    • The objective is to protect the groundwater from (industrial) pollution through the installation of a GlassWall Lance and a, so called, TDR. This process starts with sampling the area intensively and is followed by drilling holes to 20 up to 25 meter. At this depth the pollution is located and pushed back by using oxygen injections

    Background

    • Widening the A9 Gaasperdammerweg into 2 x 5 lanes and digging a 3 kilometre tunnel will reduce air and noise pollution in Amsterdam Southeast.
    • Van Kessel Bronbemaling handles dewatering and stress drainage while activities like moving cables and pipes for water, gas, electricity and telephony are carried out
    • A monitoring plan was drawn up and a complete measuring network was set up with sensors, modems and online environment to provide the principal with real-time groundwater data.

    • Before a tunnel is drilled the Municipality wants to first monitor groundwater levels for a year

  • Insight into Municipality of Zutphen’s groundwater situation

    Client - Municipality of Zutphen (the Netherlands)

    Background

    • Sound knowledge of groundwater levels, flows and fluctuations within the urban area is required for the Municipality to fulfil its duty of care regarding groundwater
    • The measuring system will also be used to provide citizens or developers with information regarding groundwater levels
    • The Municipality previously obtained this information from the environment department’s groundwater research during soil decontamination or from the Provinceof Gelderland, but these were all snapshots
    • TheMunicipality ofZutphen also wanted more insight into how the water levels from theIJssel river influence groundwater levels

    Services provided

    • Eijkelkamp Soil & Water installed a total 44 Diver water level loggers together with telemetry
    • Groundwater data are combined automatically in the existing regional control station
    • Eijkelkamp Soil & Water will manage the network for 10 years and also carry out maintenance
