Over the past 20 years, miniature fiber optic spectrometers have evolved from a novelty to a widely accepted sensor that provides valuable data. Organizations are realizing that the advanced utility and flexibility provided in this small package can provide very accurate real time data. This can be very valuable because lab analysis can take many days to complete.

The basic function of a spectrometer is to take in light, break it into its spectral components, and digitize the signal as a function of wavelength. The first step in this process is to direct light through a fiber optic cable into the spectrometer through a narrow aperture known as an entrance slit. The slit vignettes the light as it enters the spectrometer.

A few sensor functions are very important at this stage. Depending on the type of medium ranging from clear liquids to heavily polluted and turbid medium. The length of the light path needs to be determined. In a clear medium, you want to measure as much liquid as possible. But in heavily polluted and turbid medium you need to adjust the length of the path to get an accurate reading.

Another factor to consider is smearing of the lenses. If particles stick to the sensor, the sensors readout can deviate or fail to read all together. To combat this problem a solution was sought. And some of the best innovations often come in simple packages.

The Eijkelkamp spectrometer (UV/VIS) is our new and improved situ spectral analyzer and operates within the wavelength range 200 to 710 nm (UV/Vis). Because the sensor itself only contains the optics and all the electronics are housed in the control unit. This sensor is small, robust and perfect of the most challenging environments. Combine this small in-situ sensor with the latest innovations such as an adjustable light path and the option for a lens cleaning mechanism. This sensor can meet all challenges.

Curious? Than contact our product specialist and meet the difference in spectrometry (UV/VIS).

Last year the Dutch and Chilean government signed letters of intent to stimulate cooperation and economic ties. Because Chili is facing many water related issues, the Dutch Water Alliance organized a trade mission to Chili for Dutch water experts.

A good example of one of the many challenges Chili faces manifested itself during the mission. The north of Chili had to cope with unusual heavy rainfall. Normally the region of Antofagasta gets 2mm of rain per year. Due to climate change the region had to process 20mm of rain in one day. Causing all kind of problems from drainage problems to the closing of mines.

For Royal Eijkelkamp the trade mission was a success. The quality of the program was excellent, we spoke with a lot of interesting organizations and Chileans are, as always, fabulous peope.

The Rijnland District Water Control Board uses the Eijkelkamp Smart Lysimeter for better investigation of  the effects of climate change on water management.

The Rijnland District Water Control Board uses the Eijkelkamp Smart Lysimeter for better investigation of  the effects of climate change on water management. The Smart Lysimeter measurement set up, in addition to evaporation, collects data on the amount of precipitation, wind and soil moisture. This data is then transferred telemetrically to Rijnland.

Hoogheemraad Sjaak Langeslag officially launched the first Smart Lysimeter setup yesterday. In total, Rijnland uses three Eijkelkamp Smart Lysimeter set ups to acquire important information for water management. In particular the measurement of evaporation gives Water board Rijnland the additional information it can use in their water management, says Sjaak Langeslag.

"We could already see how much water falls via rain, snow and hail. How much water leaves our area through our weirs, drainages and ground. We could not accurately map the invisible water loss through evaporation. With the lysimeter, we can. "

To collect data from several soil types, The Rijnland District Water Control Board and Eijkelkamp Soil & Water selected three locations:

• In Noordwijkerhout on a sandy soil;

• In Woubrugge on a clay soil;

• In Reeuwijk on a peat soil.

The data gathered by the Smart Lysimeter provides Rijnland a better insight into the complete water cycle. This enables the Rijnland District Water Control Board to better anticipate the effects of changing weather patterns in relation to water management.

How to gather important and relevant data during the mining proces...

The project has been initiated by TU Delft and includes a broad development towards the underground mine of the future. The idea is that a lot of information is made available during the production process by using sensors in all kinds of places in the mine. For example, chemical compositions by a LIBS scanner, hardness through the MWD (Monitoring While Drilling) system of a drill and positions of LHDs (Load, Haul, Dump machines). With this information, the 3D ore model and operating schedule can be constantly updated. This will make the process a lot more efficient and safer.

Within the Real Time Mining project, Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill's task is to investigate whether we can determine from the MWD data what the compressive strength and tensile strength of the rock is. Furthermore, we may also consider whether we are able to recognize transitions between different layers or fractions.

In collaboration with the University of Aachen we conducted a test to see if it is possible to measure high-frequency vibration (100 kHz - 1 MHz) on our drilling machine. In Aachen, they discovered that using a cutter machine using an Acoustic Emission sensor, they could measure the occurrence of fractures in the rock. The theory is that the frequency band measuring this sensor far exceeds the vibration frequencies caused by the machine itself, so that you only measure the vibrations from cutting the rock.

From explorations to closure, MAREC offers a variety of advisory services throughout the whole mine life cycle...

The mining sector faces the challenge of satisfying demand for raw materials and energy whilst keeping the impacts of its operations in check. In combination with decreasing head grades and reduced accessibility to deposits, rising demand results in ever larger volumes of mining waste produced. At the same time, society’s call for accountability in mining grows stronger, making it harder to obtain and hold a ‘social licence to operate’. After mining operations, legacy sites too often add yet another challenge, with large and lasting environmental and social impacts and generally too little funds for sufficient rehabilitation.

These challenges not only inflict additional costs (e.g. for transport); they require new approaches in mine planning, handling mining wastes and rehabilitation concepts in a socially and environmentally responsible manner - without putting too much pressure on the operation. MAREC (Mining Area Rehabilitation and Environmental Control) addresses these challenges, by looking for a win-win situation where residual value can be recovered while environmental impacts are mitigated.

The MAREC Approach

Rooted in fundamental knowledge on mining and the environment, the MAREC approach starts by acknowledging that every problem is unique. Our system analysis identifies key issues, which are isolated and targeted using fast innovative procedures. Solving technological, environmental and social bottlenecks, the MAREC approach will turn your business case beneficial for all parties involved.

From explorations to closure, MAREC offers a variety of advisory services throughout the whole mine life cycle, including, amongst others:

Exploration & Feasibility

  • Sampling campaigns
  • Deposit assessment
  • Location appraisal
  • Environmental and social impact assesment
  • Bankable feasibility studies

Planning & Construction

  • Integrated mine planning
  • Infrastructural planning, design & supervision
  • Environmental management plan
  • Social management plan
  • Mine permitting
  • Hydrogeology and water management
  • Slope design (pit)

Operations

  • Equipment appraisal & procurement
  • Monitoring, including real time intelligence based decision support systems
  • Training and educationTransport (slurry)

Operations

  • Closure plan execution
  • Area restoration (rehabilitation)

Organisers of swimming events in open water still sometimes come up against unpleasant surprises. After the discovery of dead ducks in the Dutch Berkel river, the organisers of De Vrije Slag Door Zutphen (swimming event) decided to cancel the 2015 event, just prior to the start. Although participants were very understanding about the decision, the organiser was uncomfortable taking the decision based on advice from the GGD (area health authority) and in consultation with the water board and Municipality of Zutphen, without hard facts being available.

Eijkelkamp Soil & Water has now developed a unique measurement system for De Vrije Slag Door Zutphen to test the water continuously for variables important for swimmers. The smart measurement device is attached to a floating buoy and forwards the most important water values to an organisation via the Eijkelkamp web portal.

De Vrije Slag Door Zutphen was the first organiser of open water swimming events to work with this Eijkelkamp Soil & Water-developed measurement system and that has attracted quite a lot of media attention.

View the Omroep Gelderland images on Dutch television, read the article in de Stentor or listen to radio items on Omroep Gelderland and B-FM.

Measuring water level to restore degraded mangrove forests

Thursday, March 24, 2016

To bring more hydrological knowledge into mangrove restoration projects, an international group of researchers, including Bram te Brake from Eijkelkamp Academy, have performed research to link hydrological conditions and mangrove vegetation.

Mangrove restoration projects are carried out world-wide to rehabilitate degraded mangrove forests. These restoration projects often have a low success rate because planting of new trees is done without taking into account site-specific hydrological conditions. To bring more hydrological knowledge into mangrove restoration projects, an international group of researchers, including Bram te Brake from Eijkelkamp Academy, have performed research to link hydrological conditions and mangrove vegetation.

The research included measuring water levels in mangrove forest using Diver water level loggers to analyze how long and how often the mangrove sites were inundated. This was linked to the current and potential vegetation at these sites. The research was published online in scientific journal PLOS ONE on March 23rd.

Eijkelkamp’s Bram te Brake said: “We have developed a simple, but robust, toolkit to use hydrology for mangrove restoration projects, including practical suggestions to increase the success rate of these projects. One of the main recommendations is to monitoring water levels at mangrove sites for a period of at least 30 days, to cover tidal variation. Using the guidelines in the paper this data can directly be used to guide decisions on mangrove species planting or ecological restoration of the area. The toolkit is intended to be used by mangrove organizations and local parties working in the field and helps to restore the valuable ecosystem of mangroves by providing a balanced combination between scientific support and practical guidelines.”

The research was carried out in cooperation with researchers from the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) and Wageningen University (the Netherlands).

The article “Hydrological Classification, a Practical Tool for Mangrove Restoration” has been published on the PLOS website and can be downloaded freely.

Eijkelkamp Soil & Water joins the Nutrient Platform. The Nutrient Platform is a cross-sectoral network of Dutch organizations that believe in a pragmatic approach towards nutrient scarcity. Frontrunners from the water sector, agriculture, waste sector and chemical industry have joined forces to close nutrient cycles. Together with the government, knowledge institutes and NGOs we accelerate the transition towards sustainable nutrient management by creating a market for recycled nutrients. Above all, the Nutrient Platform aims to turn the surplus of phosphorus in the Netherlands into an opportunity. This surplus, mainly the result of our intensive livestock system, causes environmental problems. By recovering phosphorus from our ‘waste’ streams and turning it into valuable new products, not only the environment is improved but also the phosphorus cycle is closed.

Upgraded from the reliable CRS XL platform Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill now proudly presents the new MidRotoSonic XL Max! The multi-purpose Sonic drilling rig in a relatively small package is built to give optimal power and host the LRS 50k Sonic Head. Good vibrations!

Sonic rigs accelerate drilling speed, capacity, and boost productivity for a broad variety of applications. From Geotechnical Drilling and Environmental Drilling to Mineral and Seismic exploration, the MRS XL Max with 150Hz makes the difference. In harder soil types the LRS 50k Sonic Head, which features simultaneous vibration and rotation, optimizes penetration velocity. In soft to medium geology types you do not get any above ground cutting and no drilling mud. In harder formations it will be way cleaner than other drilling techniques. This means you and your team will work in a much cleaner, safer, and less cumbersome working area.

Safety isn’t Expensive, it’s Priceless!

At SonicSampDrill we put a lot of time and effort in realizing the difference in safety. Our team continuously searches for ways to enhance the safety features on SSD rigs. Therefore the MRS XL Max is equipped with a wide range of features such as:

-          Fully Automated Rod/Casing Handler

-          Magnetic hydraulic Rod/Casing Loader (Diameter to 12”)

-          Triple Floating Clamps

-          Mechanical Separators (among different rod layers)

-          Radio Graphic Controls

-          Flashing Drive Light

-          SPT AutoDropHammer

The Eijkelkamp Foundation is supporting Lex van Gelder in two water-related projects in Burma (also known as Myanmar).

In October 2013, Lex and his wife Rini, visited Burma once again for the first project. They have already used some of the equipment made available by the Eijkelkamp Foundation. Lex van Gelder is an independent advisor in the area of water research and treatment and has been involved in water projects in developing countries for 10 years.

Lex and his wife have participated in various projects in Burma in recent years. Political circumstances in Burma make it difficult to involve established organisations in these projects, which is why they visited the country as private individuals.

Polluted surface water

When they travelled to Burma in October, their first project involved ascertaining water quality in an area that is very interesting for the mining industry. Although the mining methods used are currently still traditional (using no or few chemicals), it was suspected that these activities caused so much pollution that this would endanger the local population’s drinking water supply. This supply mainly consists of surface water; streams are often used as water source for cooking, washing, agriculture and, of course, for drinking.

Indications from the local population about deteriorated water quality were a reason for starting this project.

Lex mapped out the current situation with an initial water quality measurement, a baseline measurement. Should further mining development result in pollution, the baseline measurement will enable this pollution to be verified. No tests had been carried out until this baseline measurement, which makes it difficult to demonstrate the presence of pollution: let alone ascribe responsibility to mining activities.

Besides measuring water quality and taking samples, Lex and his wife also worked out local possibilities of setting-up small-scale drinking water purification in Burma. Via workshops and guest lessons at primary and secondary schools, they also educated locals about the importance of hygiene, hand-washing and clean drinking water.

The Eijkelkamp Foundation provided Lex with various field kits including test strips for water quality measurement and a sieve set to conduct a sand filter demonstration.

Digging boreholes

Lex will be travelling to Burma again in 2014, for another project for which the Eijkelkamp Foundation provided a bailer boring auger set. This project will search for suitable groundwater with the aim of at least safeguarding drinking water quality by siting boreholes. As well as increasing the local population’s independence concerning a basic need, this will also result in logistical benefits. The local population in this area currently travels great distances to obtain water from partially polluted lakes and rivers. They still do this in a very primitive way using ox carts.

Boring holes with the bailer boring auger set enables water to be detected at limited depths. The project will offer training so that the local population can carry out this work themselves.

The project objectives are:

  • give direct support to the local population (together with their own organisation) in remote areas where established NGOs do not or can hardly operate
  • raise the local population’s awareness of the mining industry’s impact, water quality and sanitation
  • knowledge transfer, with the possible start-up of small local enterprise (service/bore company and/or home-made drinking water filters)
